FAQs
Can
I connect with Web TV?
WebTV
is referring their customers to local ISPs in areas where
WebTV does not have a local access number. This program is
being called OpenISP. This document gives the information
that is needed for a WebTV customer to get connected to Connection One Networks Internet.
Is OpenISP right for you and can it save you money?
If you
are making toll calls to access the WebTV Network, using OpenISP
can save you money by eliminating toll charges by using Connection One Networks Internet.
You will need to obtain an account with Connection One Networks Internet if you don't
currently have one and wish to use OpenISP.
Once you
obtain an an account with Connection One Networks Internet, you can connect to the
WebTV Network using OpenISP. You get the same WebTV Network
service, but your WebTV Internet terminal dials Connection One Networks Internet instead
of dialing the WebTV access number.
If you
use OpenISP, you will receive two bills each month. One bill
will be from Connection One Networks Internet for $19.95 plus tax if applicable (billed
to your credit card) and the other from WebTV Networks for
$9.95. You will be responsible for paying both bills to connect
to the WebTV Network.
What do customers need from Connection One Networks Internet to set-up WebTV?
WebTV
customers only need an IP login id and password along with
a local access number to use Connection One Networks Internet for dial-in access.
The customer will still be using their WebTV addresses for
email and newsgroups. The WebTV console is only set up to
use the WebTV system for email and newsgroups.
How does WebTV connect to Connection One Networks Internet?
The WebTV
console uses proprietary software and is supported directly
by WebTV. Their connection software uses PAP to authenticate
and PPP for connections. WebTV works on any system that supports
Win95 and/or MacPPP clients (such as Connection One Networks Internet).
Who do you contact for connection problems?
When you
are using Connection One Networks Internet, you need to contact the Customer Care
Center at 505-342-6442 to discuss any connection problems
or to discuss Connection One Networks Internet billing.
Connection One Networks Internet
is responsible for the WebTV console connection to the Connection One Networks Internet
network, along with the Connection One Networks Internet connection to the Internet.
If it is determined that the customer is successfully logged
into Connection One Networks Internet and still has problems, then WebTV should be
called to help troubleshoot the connection. The WebTV console
uses a WebTV server as a proxy for all internet traffic. WebTV
provides a site at beacon.webtv.net (206.67.152.69) for pinging
and sending traceroutes to so one can check for possible network
problems. They also maintain a web site at the same address
to provide pinging and traceroute functions from their network.
What happens after the connection is made?
After
establishing a PPP connection through Connection One Networks Internet, the WebTV
Internet terminal will contact the WebTV Network to gain access
to the user's account information, personal environment and
e-mail. The Internet terminal is configured to utilize the
WebTV HTTP Caching Proxy servers for HTTP requests. This traffic
will route via the Connection One Networks Internet Internet connection, across the
public Internet and into WebTV across one of WebTV's multiple
Internet connections.
