Can I connect with Web TV?

WebTV is referring their customers to local ISPs in areas where WebTV does not have a local access number. This program is being called OpenISP. This document gives the information that is needed for a WebTV customer to get connected to Connection One Networks Internet.


Is OpenISP right for you and can it save you money?

If you are making toll calls to access the WebTV Network, using OpenISP can save you money by eliminating toll charges by using Connection One Networks Internet. You will need to obtain an account with Connection One Networks Internet if you don't currently have one and wish to use OpenISP.

Once you obtain an an account with Connection One Networks Internet, you can connect to the WebTV Network using OpenISP. You get the same WebTV Network service, but your WebTV Internet terminal dials Connection One Networks Internet instead of dialing the WebTV access number.

If you use OpenISP, you will receive two bills each month. One bill will be from Connection One Networks Internet for $19.95 plus tax if applicable (billed to your credit card) and the other from WebTV Networks for $9.95. You will be responsible for paying both bills to connect to the WebTV Network.


What do customers need from Connection One Networks Internet to set-up WebTV?

WebTV customers only need an IP login id and password along with a local access number to use Connection One Networks Internet for dial-in access. The customer will still be using their WebTV addresses for email and newsgroups. The WebTV console is only set up to use the WebTV system for email and newsgroups.


How does WebTV connect to Connection One Networks Internet?

The WebTV console uses proprietary software and is supported directly by WebTV. Their connection software uses PAP to authenticate and PPP for connections. WebTV works on any system that supports Win95 and/or MacPPP clients (such as Connection One Networks Internet).


Who do you contact for connection problems?

When you are using Connection One Networks Internet, you need to contact the Customer Care Center at 505-342-6442 to discuss any connection problems or to discuss Connection One Networks Internet billing.

Connection One Networks Internet is responsible for the WebTV console connection to the Connection One Networks Internet network, along with the Connection One Networks Internet connection to the Internet. If it is determined that the customer is successfully logged into Connection One Networks Internet and still has problems, then WebTV should be called to help troubleshoot the connection. The WebTV console uses a WebTV server as a proxy for all internet traffic. WebTV provides a site at beacon.webtv.net (206.67.152.69) for pinging and sending traceroutes to so one can check for possible network problems. They also maintain a web site at the same address to provide pinging and traceroute functions from their network.


What happens after the connection is made?

After establishing a PPP connection through Connection One Networks Internet, the WebTV Internet terminal will contact the WebTV Network to gain access to the user's account information, personal environment and e-mail. The Internet terminal is configured to utilize the WebTV HTTP Caching Proxy servers for HTTP requests. This traffic will route via the Connection One Networks Internet Internet connection, across the public Internet and into WebTV across one of WebTV's multiple Internet connections.
